How do you celebrate holidays?
Let’s start from the beginning:
New Years – Me, my husband and my cat. We may have some family visiting and they’ll be there too. All festivities are at home. Snacks and appetizers you get from your frozen food section of the grocery store. They vary every year, but the Geno pizza roll is a must. And of course, champagne
NYD- we do the traditional black eyed peas and cabbage .
Valentines Day- dinner and a movie
St Patrick’s Day- MY DAY. I will make corned beef and cabbage ( it’s a well known fact that this is NOT in any way a traditional Irish delicacy), but I like making it. I also make Irish soda bread and all get washed down with Guinness stout.
Since I can’t eat red meat, I will make something more Irish like fish and chips.
Music is played all day and if time allows, we watch The Quiet Man
Marci Gras is around this time. I’ll cook up some Cajun staples like red beans and rice and jambalaya
Easter- family is here. After 40 days of no meat Fridays, we celebrate with a meat feast brunch. I will continue to cook a leg of lamb for the family. For health reasons, I have to forego red meat. Turkey leg perhaps.
Mother’s Day. My day off from cooking. Family comes to visit and treat me to dinner 😊
Father’s Day- kids do the same as Mother’s Day everyone wins.
4th of July- family bbq and fireworks
Labor Day- our anniversary falls around this time so we may do a weekend trip.
It’s also official college football kickoff.
Halloween- either a party or a movie.
Thanksgiving- If at home, I cook. We watch the parade and Westminster dog show. Begin our secret Santa list , watch football all weekend.
We may travel to other family some years.
Christmas- we are family central. Everyone arrives. Seafood feast and open presents on Christmas Eve
That’s the year in a nutshell. Other traditions we call holidays include mini juleps for Kentucky Derby, Memorial Day- must watch Indy 500, Super Bowl Sunday – need I say more?
