Unbeknownst to Speed Racer…

What Olympic sports do you enjoy watching the most?

I find myself enjoying Winter Olympics more than summer. I seem to watch the summer games in the beginning. I love the gymnastics and volleyball.

But winter games, I watch the whole thing. All the skating, skiing and hockey. The last winter games I watched with my father- in- law ( his last ) and got hooked on biathlon and curling.

My greatest memory of winter games , of course, is 1980 in Lake Placid. I’ve been a hockey aficionado ever since.

My other great memory of Winter Olympics was 2002 in Salt Lake City.

I would watch each night with my 2 children, ages 7 and 4, sitting on top of me on a love seat. We loved short track speed skating with Apollo Anton Ohno. It was one of the final races and he would compete against his arch rival from S. Korea. Every time they showed the arch rival, he had a mean, evil look. On that note, we referred to him as “ Racer X”.

The race begins and we are rooting for Apollo. They’re skating neck and neck for most of the race. As they approach the finish line, still neck and neck, they bump and topple over each other;causing an avalanche of the other racers . The Australian racer, who was way in the back the entire race, jumped over the pile of racers. He stayed on his two feet and crossed the finish line. He turned and realized what happened, then put his hands up and cheered.

We laughed so hard, we fell off the love seat.
